Miss Yang and Miss Hong, who are well experienced in this type of busin ess, are us ed to accepti ng propositions from customers. But Se-young, who is dating a college s tudent named Min-su, rejects all requests for sexual favo rs. When Min-su professes to ha ving problems with his tuit ion and fina nces, Se-yo ung reassu res him th at she wil l procure the ne cessary funds for him. Wh en t he bar's clie ntele begins to dwindle because of Se-you ng, Ji-suk reprimand s her severely. Se-yo ung develops a close relati onship with a Captain Pak and even allows him t o sleep wi th her . She a sks Captain Pak to find Mi n-su employment on a boat, but when Mi n-su comes to Sokch o for his ne w job, he sees how Se-young has been making her living. Shocked, he turns his back on the job and leaves. When he eventually returns to Sokc ho, he scathingly denounces S e-young's morality and severs t heir relationship. Decades ago, Ji-suk had stumbled i nto the bar business in a desp erate effor t to support her husban d, who wa s serving time in prison; she later left him volunta rily out o f shame and moral de grad ation. C oncern ed that Se-young will end up with the same fate, Ji-suk asks Min-su to mee t with her. She begs him not to abandon Se-young, but he flatly refu ses.
