Thi s was the firs t ful l le ngth Techni color film of cinematographer Freddie Young, who captures the spectacle of roya l weddings, grand balls and opulent interiors, w ith scene s actually filmed at r oyal palaces. The title music sets the tone: a regal c hoir sings over a shot of the crown. Elgar& #39;s 1901 'Pomp and C ircumstance' march is heard during the diamond jubilee cel ebrations and , as Victoria' s coff in lies in st ate, the film concludes with An thony Collins' stately music accompanied by the text of Rudyar d Kip ling's 'Lest we forget'. Co mbined wi th the em otional appeal of scenes of Victoria connecting with he r ';ordinary folk& #39;, this is stirring stuff. The fil m connects with c ontemporary events of 1938.
