Betsy hears his cry for help and boards the ship to look for him, just before it is cu t loose. T he Navigator drifts out into the Paci fic Oce an. The two unwitting p assengers eventual ly find each oth er. At first, they have great difficulty looking after themselves, but adapt after a fe w weeks. At one poin t, they sight a navy ship and hoist a brig htly-colored f lag, no t realizing it signals that the ship is under quara ntine. As a result, the other ves sel turns away. Finally, the ship gro unds itse lf ne ar a n inh abited tr opical isl and and springs a leak. While Rollo dons a deep sea divin g suit and submer ges t o patch the hole, the blac k natives canoe out and take Betsy captive. When Rollo eme rges from the ocean, the natives are sc ared off, enabling him to re scue B etsy and take her ba ck to the ship. The natives return and try to board the ship . Aft er a fierc e struggl e, Rollo and Bet sy try to escape in a small din ghy. It starts to sink, and t he natives swiftly overta ke them in their canoes.
