《盲目的丈夫們》是由知名导演埃裏克·馮·施特羅海姆 执导的一部愛情片,薩姆·德·格拉斯 Francelia Billin 等倾情出演,该片讲述了: Two diff erences between t his Austrian version and the generally avail able Am erican version are i mmedia tely obviou s: they differ both in their length and in the language of t he intertitle s. The American version is only 1,8 83 metres long - at 1 8 frames per second a differe nce of some 7 minutes t o the Aus trian v ersi on w ith 2,045 metres. Whereas we originally presumed only a negligible difference, resulting fro m the varyin g length of the intertit les, a d irect com parison has nevertheless shown that the Austrian version differs from the American version both in the m ontage and in the duration of individual scenes. Yet how could i t happen that the lat er regional dist ribution of a canonical US silent film was longer t han the &qu ot;original version"? The prevale nt American version of Blind Husbands does not correspond to the vers ion shown at the premiere of 1919. This li ttle-kno wn fact was al ready published by Richard Kos zarski in 1983. T he film wa s re-relea sed by U niversal P ictures in 1924 , in a version that was 1,365 f eet (4 16 metres) shorte r. At 18 frames per second, this amounts to a time dif ference of 20 minute s! "Title s were altered, sni ppets of actio n removed and at least one maj or scene t aken out entirely, where von Steub en and Marg aret visit a small loca l chapel.&qu ot; ( Koszarski) From the present state of research we can assume t hat all the known American copies of the fi lm de rive from this shor tened re-release version, a copy of which Univers al donated to the Museum of Mode rn Art in 1941. Accor ding to Koszarski the origi nal n egative of the film was destroyed som etim e between 1 956 and 1961 and has therefo re been irr etrievably lost. T his information casts an interes ting light on the Austrian vers ion, which can be dated to th e period between the summer of 1921 and the wint er of 1922. Further more, the copy i s some 20 0 metres longer th an the US version of 1924. If one follows the details given by Richard Koszarski and Arthur Lennig, this mean s that, as far as both its date a nd its length ar e concerned, the Austrian ve rsion li es al most exactly in the middle bet ween the (lost) version shown at t he pre miere and the re-released one.A larg e part of t he additional le ngth of the film can be traced to c uts that w ere made to the 1924 version in almo st every shot. K oszarski des cribes ho w the beginning and the end of scenes were trimmed, in order to "sp eed u p" the film. Howev er, more exciting was the d iscovery that the A ustrian version contains shots that are missing in the Ame rican one - shots/cou ntershot s, in tertitles - and furth ermore sho ws di fferenc es in its montage (i .e. the placi ng of t he individ ual shots w ithin a sequence). All this indicates that Die Rac he der Berge con stitutes the oldest and most c ompletely preserv ed material of the film .
