Meanwhile, Huck unexpectedly s tumble s up on someone h e knows very well. &quo t;Countess Scharwenka ", a temp eramental customer at Roberta's, turns out to be his hometown sweetheart Lizzie Gatz (Ginger Rogers). She g ets Huck's band an engagem ent at th e nightclu b whe re she is a featured entertai ner. Tw o thing s trouble J ohn. One is Ladislaw (Victor Varconi), th e handsome Russian deposed prince and doorman who seems too interested i n Stephanie. The other is the memor y of Sophie (Clai re Dodd), th e snobb ish, conceited gir lfriend he left behind after a quarrel over his la ck of sophistication and p olish. When Aunt Minnie dies unexpectedly without lea ving a wil l, John inherits the shop. Knowing nothing about w omen& #39;s fashion and t hat his aunt intended for Stepha nie to in herit the busi ness, he persuades Stephanie to remain as his partner. Correspondents flock to he ar what a footba ll player has to say about feminine fas hions. Huck give s the answers, m aking a lot of weird statements about the innovations John is planning to introdu ce. Sophie arrives in Paris, att racted by Jo hn's good fo rtune. She enters the shop, looking for a dress, but is di ssati sfied with e very thing Stephanie s hows her. H uck persuades her to choose a gown that John had ordered disc arded as too vulgar. W hen John sees her in i t, they quarrel f or the final time. John reproaches Stephanie for selling Sop hie the gow n. Terrib ly hu rt, Stephani e quit s the shop. With Roberta's putt ing on a fashion sho w in a wee k, Huck take s over the design work, with predi ctably bad results. When Stephanie sees his awfu l creations, she is persuaded to return to save Roberta's reputation . The show i s a tr iumph, he lped b y the entertaining of Huck , Count ess Sc harwenka, and the band. (A pre-stardom Lucille Ball, with platinum blon d hair, appe ars uncredited in her first RKO film[4] as a model wearing an elaborate feather cape, after the vocal by Dunne, in t he fashion show.[5]) The closing sensation is a gown mode led by St ephanie her self. At the show, John overhears that she and Ladislaw are le aving Paris and mistakenly assumes that they have married. Later, he congra tulates her for becomi ng a princess. Whe n she i nforms him that Lad islaw is merely her cousin and that the ti tle has bee n hers since birth, the lovers are reunited.
