In the bad air of a backward country, anti-Semitic ideas are born, valu able i ndividuals meet obstacles on their way, and scoundrels are successf ul. This po etic love st ory follows a nouveau riche merchant, St anislaw Wokulski, through a se ries of trials and tribulations occas ioned by his obs essi ve pass ion for an aristocratic beauty, Izabela Lecka , played by the famous Polish actress, Beata Tyszk iewicz. P lot: As a de scenda nt o f an impoverished Polish noble famil y, young Wo kulski is forced t o work as a wai ter at Hopfer's, a Warsaw restaurant, while dreaming of a life in sc ience. After takin g part in the failed 1863 Upri sing again st Tsarist Russ ia, he is sentenced to exile in Siberia. On eventual ret urn to Warsaw, he becomes a salesman at Min cel's haberd ashery. Marrying the late owner 's widow (who e ventually dies), he come s into mo ney a nd use s it to set u p a partners hip with a Russian merchant he had me t whi le i n exile. T he two merc hants go to Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 , and Wokuls ki makes a fortune s upplying the R ussian Army. The enterprising Wokulski now proves a roman tic at heart, fal ling in love with Izabela, daughter of the vacuous, bank rupt aristoc rat, Tomasz Łęcki. In his quest to win Izabela, Wok ulski begins frequenti ng th eatre s and aristocratic salons; and to help he r financi ally distressed father, f ounds a company and sets the aristoc rats up as shareholders in his business.The indolence of t hese aristocrats , who secure with their pensions, are too lazy t o undertake new business risks, frustrates Wokulski. His abi lity to make money is respected but his lac k of family and social rank is condesce nded to .
